The Maine Society of Certified Public Accountants requires that all professionals working in the state complete 40 hours of CPE credit each 12-month registration period. As well, 4.0 CPE hours in professional ethics must be completed every three years. Of the remaining credits, no more than 20 per year can be in a “soft” subject matter, such as communications, economics, human resources or other non-accounting topics. The remainder must deal specifically with accounting and auditing.
Accountants licensed to perform government audits must also complete 80 hours of CPE every two years, with 24 credits obtained in training related to governmental subjects.
