Lorman Education Services offers multiple convenient ways to earn credits toward CHPS recertification.
Privacy and security are important concerns in any industry. In healthcare, where sensitive medical, financial and personal information is at stake, privacy and security are critical. Add to that the regulatory scrutiny care providers are under from HIPAA and other laws, and it's clear why there is a growing need for highly trained health privacy and security professionals.
The Certified Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS) credential from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) is one of the most unique and best-recognized in the healthcare industry. Achieving CHPS certification demonstrates to potential employers a high level of competence in designing, implementing and administering healthcare privacy and security protection programs — key attributes that can take your career to the next level.
Who Can Apply for CHPS Certification
CHPS is a high-level certification intended for professionals who already have experience working in a healthcare setting. In order to sit for the exam, you must have:
- An Associate's degree and at least six years of relevant experience
- A Bachelor's degree or prior RHIT certification as well as at least four years of relevant experience
- A Master's degree or higher, or RHIA certification, and at least two years of experience

Security is a rapidly changing field, and to ensure all CHPS holders are on top of the latest developments, 30 credit hours of continuing education must be completed every two-year recertification period. This requirement can be fulfilled through online training such as live and previously recorded webinars, so long as 80% of all programming is in a topic relevant to the field of health informatics and information management (HIIM).
